For three years we have provided Trevor with some form of therapy or intervention (most all of which insurance has not covered).
However, we never saw the dramatic results then as we are seeing now with of the following interventions:
- Applied Behavior Analysis: Intense one-on-one therapy provided daily to help children develop socially important
behaviors (such as communication and language skills, etc) in meaningful ways. (see ABA therapy on the internet) The
use of Positive Reinforcement helps the child learn to repeat behaviors that are positive and eliminate behaviors that are negative.
- National Association for Child Development(nacd.org) is a national institution which provides parents with neurological
exercises and programs to do at home several times a day which can strengthen and organize the neurological functions of the
brain. NACD treats any developmental problem, including stroke, brain injuries resulting from car accidents, autism, mental retardation, etc.
- Intensive Speech Therapy. Oral Motor Speech Apraxia is a neurologically-based motor planning speech disorder that cannot
be corrected without necessary and appropriate-intensive speech therapy. Children with apraxia have difficulty translating
their thoughts into a correct sequence of movements of their mouth, tongue, and lips. Speech therapy is required daily to
help build muscles inside the mouth and provide the brain with enough frequency and repetition to learn how to speak clearly.
Kids with apraxia cannot overcome this problem without persistent and consistent therapy.
- Sensory Integration Dysfunction Therapy. Sensory Integration Dysfunction is the inability of the brain to correctly process
information brought in by the senses. Therapy is used to help the body make sense of the world around him in appropriate ways.
